Tattered Angels Resist Techniques + Kid Friendly

Tattered Angels DT Theme for July is projects that are easy enough for kids utilizing resist techniques. I don’t have any children living nearby but this may be one of the easiest techniques that could be used. This is another technique that I love to use to create my own backgrounds. This time instead of paper I am using a Canvas Corp Mini Journal Book made from canvas. Although I have the start of an idea of what the final project will be  and it’s just a start I can at least share 4 of the pages that I have created.

I like to use  Claudine Hellmuth’s Studio Multi-Medium Matte, a gel medium, and a stencil to get started…along with a palette knife or old credit card. Spread a thin coat of the gel medium over the stencil, remove the stencil and allow to air dry or get out the heat gun. It leaves a clear resist that then can be misted with your favorite Tattered Angels paint products. Here are several of the pages that I’v created so far:
I went for light, neutral colors with the idea that it might be tea-dyed or aged.
Material Used: The Crafters Workshop Balzer Design’s Stencil ~ Mini Mix & Match Hearts, Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Medium Matte, Canvas Corp Canvas Mini Journal, Tattered Angels Chalkboard Glimmer Mist~Sandy BeachGlimmer Mist ~ Post Card , Gilded Gold
Light neutral colors but with a hint of color for the starburst & star.
Materials Used: The Crafters Workshop ~ Starburst, Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Medium Matte, Canvas Corp Canvas Mini Journal, Tattered Angels Chalkboard Glimmer Mist~Sandy BeachGlimmer Mist ~ Post Card , Gilded Gold, Silk, Sun Sisters, Pumpkin Spice
Light neutral colors but with a hint of color  for the cover.
Material Used: The Crafters Workshop Dylusions Stencil ~ Dotted Flowers, Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Medium Matte, Canvas Corp Canvas Mini Journal, Tattered AngelsChalkboard Glimmer Mist~Sandy BeachGlimmer Mist ~ Post Card , Gilded Gold, Silk
I created this flower to use on the cover…it looks better in person but I haven’t attached it yet so I can change my mind when completed. I LOVE how the Canvas Corp Flower came out.

Material Used: The Crafters Workshop Dylusions Stencil ~ Dotted Flowers, Claudine Hellmuth Studio Matte Medium Matte, Canvas Corp Canvas Mini Journal & Flower, Wendy Vecchi Studio 490 Art Parts ~ Button, Helmar 450 Quick Dry  Adhesive, Tattered Angels Chalkboard Glimmer Mist~Sandy BeachGlimmer Mist ~ Post Card , Gilded Gold, Silk, Sun Sisters, Pumpkin Spice, Moss & Verdigris

I hope you give this technique a try. I will be back later this month with more projects and news from the 2012 SUMMER CHA in Chicago, Il. Speaking of which...I better finish packing!!!

Background Art Papers made with Tattered Angels

Spring has sprung and color is everywhere you look. When I'm asked what it is about Tattered Angels paint mediums that excites me it comes down COLOR. I don't see these products as an after thought to mist here and there but as a way to create beautiful background papers.  This post I will be sharing with you examples of how I see Tattered Angels products and its uses for creating your very own designer paper.
This project is a collection of background papers I created to make a journal for use in a class, Letter Love 101, with Joanne Sharpe. I think you will find how beautiful Tattered Angels works on 140lb. Watercolor Paper by Strathmore. Watercolor paper grabs the color and the interferences in each product. Now I can tell you that I used a total of 11 different Glimmer Mist paints and 8 different Glimmer Chalkboard paints to create these backgrounds with a variety of stencils from Crafters Workshop. These background pages measure 9"x12". Here you see them before they were cut apart to make the journal where I will practice my new Lettering skills.
Here are pictures of the front cover with the title that soon will be hand lettered on {I photoshopped the title so that you would get the idea of the look I will going for} and some of the pages in the journal. Using duct tape and 7 Gypsies paper tape I created this no sew journal.
Don't the colors just pop, so brilliant and fun. I just love how Tattered Angels paint mediums work on watercolor paper. You must try it.
Now I must go because I have homework for this ATC class I'm taking with Catherine Matthews Scanlon over at My Creative Classroom...looking forward to doing these ATC's. I think there is still time to sign up to take it ;)

Thanks for stopping by!

Tattered Angels Love Stencils, Stamps & Masks

This month the Tattered Angels Design Team focused on how to use various stencils, screens & masks. I find that many of my projects start with this technique and I wanted to share what one looks like before I finish it. This is a great way to make your own resist paper. I started with a plain kraft brown cardstock and 3 different screens. The starburst and harlequin stencils are from The Crafters Workshop while the circles are from a piece of punchinella. I scrapped Claudine Hellmuth's Multi-Medium Matte over the stencils and allowed it to dry. I then Glimmer Misted and allowed the paint to drip randomly down my paper {I flipped the paper because I like the dips floating up. I really loved the effect of colors and the designs left where ever the Multi Medium resisted the mist. Cool, huh?
Here is the finished layout. I used Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Blackberry Cordial,Butternut SquashMallard and Snowy Pine to create the splashes of color. The mailing tag was what I moped the excess Glimmer Mist with, the chipboard from Out There Chippy received extra coats of the same Glimmer Mist used in the background and I applied the brass embellishments from Out There Trinkets with my ever faithful Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive and Liquid Scrap Dots. This is a really simple technique...just think...you can make your own mistable resist paper. My second project this month was the Pink Paislee Shadowbox. If you've been following this blog you know that Tattered Angels paint products and wood are a match made in heaven. Here is the completed project...it is going to be a gift for Christmas so I did not embellish the inside, leaving that to the gift recipient.
I started this project by covering the frame with a coat of Tattered Angels Butternut Squash Glimmer Mist. A Tattered Angels flourish screen was then placed down and misted with Blackberry CordialPumpkin SpiceMallard & Timberline. To define the opening I stamped using Archival Jet Black ink to insure the next layers of color would not bleed through. The inside of the shadowbox was covered with random sheet music and pages from a book using Helmar Decoupage & Craft Paste. I used the Harlequin stencil from Crafters Workshop and gesso to lay down another layer for texture. When dry Tattered Angels Nougat Glimmer Mist was applied and allowed to drip giving it a look of being old. The wooden cut-out embellishments from Kaisercraft were misted with Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist in Fairway & Fern. I attached the wood and brass embellishments with Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive and then a final coat of the fabulous Twinkle Toes Glimmer Mist {oh my, if you haven't tried this yet then put it on your list}.
My last project was done on the reverse side of a Prima Mistable canvas sheet...I wanted to do a canvas but I didn't have one so I utilized this and applied it to a 12x12 canvas board with Helmar Premium Craft Glue...turned out to be a great solution and the Prima canvas is of such quality that I may have to by more just for that purpose!I used a Tattered Angels screen from the Bold Borders set and applied Rockin' on Sunshine Glimmer Glam over the screen and random swaths of it over the remaining canvas knowing it would resist further Glimmer Mists. I then use a Prima mask in the same area and lightly misted with Mallard Glimmer Mist. I stamped with the matching Tattered Angels Clear Stamp to finish. With random misting using Blackberry CordialPumpkin Spice &  Mallard Glimmer Mist I finished the background. I added a textured brick stamp to add texture and then I did a faux sewing technique to create the illusion of being sewn with black thread. To finish I used Prima Canvas letters sprayed with Butternut Squash and stenciled with Pumpkin Spice and Tim Holtz Grungeboard letters got a healthy coating of Mallard. The butterflies are cut out from Prima Mistable canvas misted and layered with the same colors as in the background and a coating ofTwinkle Toes Glimmer Glam applied. To complete the project a Prima Vine, May Arts Leaf Ribbon and the butterflies were attached with Helmar 450 Quick Dry Glue and Liquid Scrap Dots.
I'm thrilled with the way these 3 projects came out and I realized after the fact that the majority of Glimmer Mist & Chalkboard mists are from the Ltd. Ed. Fall 2011 Collection. Shows you the versatility of the colors and how different they look depending on how they are utilized.
Thanks for stopping by...hope you enjoyed  these projects !

Fabric + Tattered Angels = YUMMY STUFF ;)

I had so much fun doing this month's projects...working with fabric. Clothing & Textile Arts was my minor in college...spending most of my time either in clothing labs or in the art building taking fiber arts courses. I've been a quilter & quilt instructor, cross stitch, needlepoint and weaver {even had my own loom}. Working with the Tattered Angels paint mediums brings me back to all these past endeavors. My heart now is with with paper arts and multi-media...but incorporating fabric is high on my list.
Felt flowers close up

What do you get when you mix  fabrics & laces with Tattered Angels paint mediums??? COLOR...COLOR...COLOR!
My 1st project involves white wool felt and Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist & Glam. Felt flowers have been all the rage and you will find a plethora of tutorials and patterns online for these flowers. I chose to work with wool felt knowing that while damp I could mold it into any shape I wanted to.  Using a basket from my collection I created a rose, camilla, violet, hydrangea and a small bud along with hand shaped petals to freshen it up. With a few butterflies, some bling and antique lace this basket is now ready to welcome Spring.
Materials used: white wool felt, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist {S.W.A.K., Pashmina, Vintage Rose, Delphinium, Spring Violet, Bubbles}, Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist{Cotton Candy, Grape Ape, Firefly} and Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam {Love Potion No. 9, Royal Velvet, Private Memo}. Prima/Marion Smith Vintage Trinkets, Butterflies, Candy Gems.

Spring Basket

Next up is a white Nine West cotton guaze scarf I found at TJ Maxx. I wanted to try stamping and hand painting to create a random border along the bottom of the scarf. I used Tattered Angels Architectural Trims {Screen Print Clear Stamps}, Black Staz-on Ink and Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam in Love Potion No. 9, Private Meadow, Royal Velvet, Mermaid and Tidal Pool.

Hand Stamped & hand painted scarf.

My final project this month is going to become a cover for my very 1st Art Journal. I used 2 -  4x6" canvas pages, sewed together and screen printed the top with Tattered Angels Screen Print and Glimmer Mists from the 2011 Spring Bahaman Cruise colors {Sun Sister, Marmalade, Rum Punch, Puerto Rico,Bahama Blue, Trunk Bay}. The ivory twill pleated ribbon from Pink Paislee {discontinued but should be brought back} was then sprayed to match along with Prima canvas letters and flower. Using Tim Holtz's Heart Wings die-cut I cut white felt that was then painted and shaped with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam {Peach Bellini, Rockin' on Sunshine}. To finish it I doodled my title and outlined the screen print and stitching.

She...Loves to

Close up.

I hope you enjoyed these projects...the Design Team has now worked with wood, glass, canvas, metal and fabric. I am so excited to learn how well these Tattered Angels paint mediums work outside the realm of just paper...it opens a whole new world has to what and how you create.
See you next month...Martha

Knock on WOOD...

I'm so excited to be able to share my Nov. projects designed for Tattered Angels. This month was all about wood and Tattered Angels products...what could you do with the two...re-cycled, re-used, re-purposed. I am not a wood person so the first thing I had to do was come up with something wood...that was the easy part...then I started experimenting on scrap pieces...the effect was AMAZING...I WAS SOLD! Wood & Tattered Angels is a match made in heaven.

PROJECT #1 CANDLESTICKS ~  Unfinished wood candlesticks, toy wheels, wood balls, wood spindle toppers and the oh so glorious FALL 2010 Glimmer Mist Colors...this is what you get.

PROJECT #2 SHADOW BOX ~ Before I knew about this project I had ordered this beautiful Angel Wings Shadow Box made by Twiddleybitz, an Australian Company, to celebrate my being chosen to be on the Tattered Angels Design Team. It arrived just in the nick of time and I had so much fun putting it together and creating it. This incorporated unfinished wood with Glimmer Mist, Glimmer Glaze, Glimmer Glam, Regal Font, Vintaj, Prima and Parisian Anthology paper from Pink Paislee.

PROJECT #3 PICTURE FRAME ~  Unfinished wood picture frame, Tattered Angels Clear Stamps, Staz-on Black, Glimmer Glazes, Glimmer Mist and a favorite PaPaYa card. This started out to be a frame for a mirror. I couldn't find a mirror that size and was being really lazy so I hit up my stash of cards...this happens to be one of my favs. I almost fell over when I realized that the colors were perfect together...providence! The two were made for each other.

I hope you enjoyed these projects. I can say that working with the different paint products that Tattered Angels offers and wood has opened up a whole new avenue of creating...try it!

I would like to extend Happy Thanksgiving greetings to everyone. Hopefully the Tattered Angels new website will be up soon...stop back and see what we are creating for Dec....you won't want to miss it! My day for posting will be the 22nd of every month.
