Butterflies, Stencils & Tattered Angels

I He{ART} stencils...I love what stencils can do to create beautiful projects...I particularly love the stencils designed by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and Dyan Reaveley. Stencils are a great way to add interest to a plain background and all the various Tattered Angels paint products can add that extra punch. I often create my own background paper just for this reason. I started with these 2 tags using different mediums. The blue tag was created with Tattered Angels Chalkboard Glimmer Mist in Boogie Board and Splash. Using the new stamp & stencils combination from Balzer Designs I stenciled the large butterfly with Boogie Board again adding a deeper colored layer.
I  used the corresponding  stencil overlay with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze in Shindig to create the butterfly wings. The green tag actually was a mop tag that I stenciled the butterfly with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Woven Burlap and the stencil overlay I used Plain Jane Stained Glass in Purple. I then coated the entire tag with Glimmer Glam in Old Pages.
I created the 2 tags as experiments and decided to go a step further with the green tag.T

I grabbed more stenciled scraps from prior projects and you can see all the various stencils used on Strathmore 400 Series Watercolor Paper.  I love creating my own backgrounds and Tattered Angels paint projects just love the texture of the watercolor paper.
Here is what I created utilizing the above materials. The second butterfly was stamped utilizing the corresponding Butterfly stamp and I found the blue scraps and felt they were exactly what this needed. I love the vibrancy of these colors. With my trusty Helmar Acid Free AdhesiveDuck Brand Duck TapeDylusions Stamps Word Love and 7Gypsies Gaffer Tape I now have a cute clipboard where I can keep ephemera for my art journal.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will come back...there are going to be some big changes going on here!!! I'm looking so forward to being able to devote my full time efforts to creating art now that I have retired from teaching. I hope to be sharing on my blog much more often than I have!!

Tattered Angels Design Team 2012

Been busy...busy...busy. It's a good busy but phew...I've bubblewrapped my last project that will heading with me to CHA. I want to share my latest post from the Tattered Angels blog. I hope you enjoy ;) Now back to work!

I'm so excited to be back for a second term on the Tattered Angels Design Team and to be in the presence of such creative artists. I'd like to share with you three projects I submitted for the DT call. It was nerve wracking trying to figure out how to do something different, step out of my comfort zone, be unique and stand out.
My first project is an altered word mirror that I paid $1.99 for at Michaels. I'm calling this my thrift store project because it cost only pennies to make. Before misting the mirror I stamped around the inside of the mirror and applied Golden Glass Bead medium and embedded a large assortment of various embellishments & trinkets. Once dry I misted the mirror with Tattered Angels Blackberry CordialTimberline Glimmer Mist and Seven Seas Chalkboard Glimmer Mist. To finish off I used a fan brush and appliedTwinkle ToesPixie DustOcean Spray and Bordeaux Glimmer Glam to add some glitter and sparkle.
For my second project I tried something I've never done before...a white on white creation. I tend to grab and use lots & lots of color but in this case I decided to really step out of my comfort zone. This is going to be a first in  a series of the four seasons. WINTER DREAMS is done on a 12" round canvas, my favorite type of canvas to work on! I applied several different random layers from books, music and paper to the canvas with Helmar Decopage. A thin coat of gesso was applied next over all the paper and I stenciled 3 snowflakes with a heavier layer of gesso.  I started misting until I was happy with the background. Then antique lace, crystals, pearls and a Pink Paislee alphabet were applied with various Helmar Adhesives to finish this off. I used the following colors for this canvas: Glimmer Mists in Snow Queen, Iridescent GoldBronzeNougatDazzling Diamonds & Pearl. Chalkboard Glimmer Mist in Chalk, Glimmer Glam in Chandelier &Twinkle Toes and Glimmer Glaze in Champagne.
My final project was created for my husband Phil who encourages me every step of the way and also offers honest {and often correct} critiques of my projects. Another inexpensive wood box that I picked up along the way altered into a box to hold "whatnots" on his computer desk. Stamping, embossing, Tim Holtz Ideaology parts & Grunge Board pieces add to the design of this box. The Tattered Angels Colors use were Glimmer Mist in TimberlineMallardSnowy Pine and Blackberry Cordial, Chalkboard inCalypso and Glimmer Glaze in Icicle & Emerald Cove finish off the colors.

Tattered Angels & DCWV Embossed Cards & Helmar

This months Tattered Angels DT projects was to design cards. I'm not an enthusiastic card maker but I stumbled across a solution...the EMBOSSED BOX OF CARDS by DCWV.  This set contains 40 embossed cards and envelopes with 10 different designs. The embossing is so cool I thought I would just paint each card with a different Tattered Angels Paint medium and see what happened. Here is a picture of all three together.

Little Sprout can about with a BABY embossed card that I painted with a coat of Tattered Angels LIPSTICK PINK Glimmer Glam, added a sentiment and Prima Flowers dusted with Tattered Angels CHANDELIER Glimmer Glam, some Helmar's Craft Glue & Scrap Dots…how easy was that? Oh ~ I might like this type of card making.

The next one used a HEARTS embossed card and a coat of Tattered Angels PRIVATE MEADOW Glimmer Glam along with assorted embellishments including my homemade heart embellishment. Using my Helmar glue products again it was done in no time and a stash buster at that!

Last but not least is my favorite of them all.  A BROCADE embossed card that I added Tattered Angels ROCKIN’ ON SUNSHINE Glimmer Glam, BAHAMA BLUE Glimmer Mist, wooden letters from Pink Paislee and my homemade winged heart using Tim Holtz’s HEART WINGS Sizzix die. Of course using my HELMAR Premium Craft Glue made the whole card put together and finished in a flash!

With a fabulous set of Embossed cards from DCWV, add some Tattered Angels Paint mediums and Helmar glue and you are good to go. No more remembering at the 11th hour that you need to get a card out to your favorite somebody and not have anything...brilliant idea!!

Thanks for stopping by,

Fabric + Tattered Angels = YUMMY STUFF ;)

I had so much fun doing this month's projects...working with fabric. Clothing & Textile Arts was my minor in college...spending most of my time either in clothing labs or in the art building taking fiber arts courses. I've been a quilter & quilt instructor, cross stitch, needlepoint and weaver {even had my own loom}. Working with the Tattered Angels paint mediums brings me back to all these past endeavors. My heart now is with with paper arts and multi-media...but incorporating fabric is high on my list.
Felt flowers close up

What do you get when you mix  fabrics & laces with Tattered Angels paint mediums??? COLOR...COLOR...COLOR!
My 1st project involves white wool felt and Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist & Glam. Felt flowers have been all the rage and you will find a plethora of tutorials and patterns online for these flowers. I chose to work with wool felt knowing that while damp I could mold it into any shape I wanted to.  Using a basket from my collection I created a rose, camilla, violet, hydrangea and a small bud along with hand shaped petals to freshen it up. With a few butterflies, some bling and antique lace this basket is now ready to welcome Spring.
Materials used: white wool felt, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist {S.W.A.K., Pashmina, Vintage Rose, Delphinium, Spring Violet, Bubbles}, Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist{Cotton Candy, Grape Ape, Firefly} and Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam {Love Potion No. 9, Royal Velvet, Private Memo}. Prima/Marion Smith Vintage Trinkets, Butterflies, Candy Gems.

Next up is a white Nine West cotton guaze scarf I found at TJ Maxx. I wanted to try stamping and hand painting to create a random border along the bottom of the scarf. I used Tattered Angels Architectural Trims {Screen Print Clear Stamps}, Black Staz-on Ink and Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam in Love Potion No. 9, Private Meadow, Royal Velvet, Mermaid and Tidal Pool.

Hand Stamped & hand painted scarf.

My final project this month is going to become a cover for my very 1st Art Journal. I used 2 -  4x6" canvas pages, sewed together and screen printed the top with Tattered Angels Screen Print and Glimmer Mists from the 2011 Spring Bahaman Cruise colors {Sun Sister, Marmalade, Rum Punch, Puerto Rico,Bahama Blue, Trunk Bay}. The ivory twill pleated ribbon from Pink Paislee {discontinued but should be brought back} was then sprayed to match along with Prima canvas letters and flower. Using Tim Holtz's Heart Wings die-cut I cut white felt that was then painted and shaped with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam {Peach Bellini, Rockin' on Sunshine}. To finish it I doodled my title and outlined the screen print and stitching.

Close up.

I hope you enjoyed these projects...the Design Team has now worked with wood, glass, canvas, metal and fabric. I am so excited to learn how well these Tattered Angels paint mediums work outside the realm of just paper...it opens a whole new world has to what and how you create.
See you next month...Martha
