PanPastels and Art Journals

I love working with PanPastels and I had the opportunity to play this week with an assignment from the Helmar Design Team promo week with PanPastels. I chose to look at its uses differently...instead of creating a background from PanPastels I would start with a background already completed. I also wanted to see how they would work over various types of materials I would be using. This journal page was created in the Dyan Reaveley Creative Journal which has become one of my favorite to work in. The paper is scrumptious and was designed for a variety of mediums. The stencils I used for this page is one of the new Ronda Palazzari designs from The Crafters Workshop called Quatrafoil in the 12x12 size and Balzer Designs Diamonds. I used several Tim Holtz stamps from Stampers Anonymous and also from MaVinci Stamps.

Here are photos taken during different stages of completion.
Acrylic background created with Ranger Adirondack Acrylic Paint Dabbers.
Vintage sheet music applied with Helmar Acid Free Glue.
PanPastel applied with the Angle Slice Art Sponge.
PanPastels applied over collaged and gessoed wash tape & vintage sheet music.
Using a stencil designed by Ronda Palazzari and applying Versamark Ink this pattern was created
when PanPastels were applied over it.
Tim Holtz Melange Tissue paper, vintage book pages and washi tape with
several colors of  PanPastels layered over them.
Stamped image with PanPastels applied with Soffit Knife Tool.

Completed journal page.

I was very pleased with experimenting how PanPastels would react with different mediums. After finishing I did spray both pages with a fixative to make sure they would not smear. I was pleased at how adding PanPastels over acrylic paint actually added depth and color.

Thanks for stopping by today...I hope I've inspired you to take a look at PanPastels! Have a great weekend.

Organized my Tim Holtz Distress Inks or Things That Make Me Happy

Sometimes it's the little things that can make one happy. I've wanted to label all my Tim Holtz Distress Inks and change the way I was storing them. I knew I wanted the labels to display the color and on all 4 sides but I just never got around to it.

I try to organize my work space in a way that creates an easy work flow. I had the Distress Inks in plastic storage boxes but I would have to pull out a whole pile to look through to find the right color. When I say I wanted to create an easier work flow I remember reading that this is one way to organize your studio, products, etc. Basically that is the general way that my studio is set up but it still needs tweaking and this is one of those TWEAKS ;)

This side of my studio stores most of my inks, paints, stamps,  and tools for most projects. It is directly in back of my project table and within arms reach. I don't have to get out of my creative mojo to look for something I need. I LOVE my Ikea Expedit shelf and I have found various inexpensive baskets and containers to hold my supplies. The stamps are organized by designer, paints & inks by company.

I found some Avery labels and swiped the ink color on the labels needed. I hand wrote each label because I wanted to get to work and knew that it would take time for me to get to a laser printer. I love how the labels took the color!

I decided to label all  my favorite colors first knowing that I would get bored doing it.  This was a real eye opener when I realized which colors I use the most. At this point I stopped for the evening.

When I started back up I went ahead and again did the colors I like the most out of the remaining inks. You can see the ones I left for last...lol!

I chose to label all 4 sides because when I clean up I don't want to waste time looking for the side with the color. It was worth the little bit of extra time! Now I had to find a way to store them. I looked online for storage ideas and realized I didn't want to spend the money {would rather by supplies} or take the time to make one. There are some great storage ideas on line but I went "shopping in my house" and came up with 2 different containers just perfect for the task at hand! The smaller one contains my favorite 21 ink colors...yippee...and it will sit on my project table with in an arms reach.

The remaining 27 ink colors will be stored on a shelf in this miniature armoire. Both of these storage containers will eventually get altered but I can live with them for now.

I figure the entire project took about 7 hours over a 3 day period. Here is the link to the chart provided by Ranger Ink if you want to do this yourself. It must be printed with a laser printer, an ink jet printer will not work as the words will smudge when you apply the color.

I hope this gets you thinking on how your craft area is organized. Do you have any tips or suggestions?

Thanks for stopping by!

On the Road with Saint Motel...

Or my life as a groupie...no...just kidding!

Thank you for joining our blog hop...I'm so excited to help promote the Indie band "Saint Motel" , a LA based band. This is a collaboration put together by Matt and Vicki Chrisman to help promote the bands new CD in a art/crafts sort of way, using the idea of the newest CD "Voyeur". Vicki, being the music lover she is, jumped at the opportunity and asked  several artists to create a project.

Who is SAINT MOTEL?

"With sophisticated savvy and singularity, the Los Angeles quartet Saint Motel has built a formidable reputation on the back of inventive indie pop and wildly fun live shows. Mixing blistering pep with unique flair and rousing rhythms, Saint Motel’s aural catharsis is pure bliss with a twist of cynical humor."....Review 8/3/2012 by Rudyard's British Pub

The idea for this project was to create a piece or craft design that reflects how the album translates to me, what it is to be a "voyeur". So without further ado here is my interpretation.

Harley-Davidson meets Art!

This week for a DT project at Helmar the Design Team I was asked to create a masculine project for the man in my life. I created this for my husband who rides a Harley...something that he could hang in his studio. I've been hoarding this embossed metal and metal tape knowing that it would get put to good use at some point. He is always so supportive of what I do but rarely reaps any projects so this was the perfect time to create something that honors what he loves to do. Now I'm going to tell you a little secret...I hang the cost of his Harley and all the added parts over his head whenever I see his eyebrow go up when a new package of supplies comes to the door for me. "Why honey, never in a million years will what I buy even come close to what you've spent on your Harley"...end of conversation...point taken ;)

Here are the materials I chose to use for this project:

Because this project would consist of 3 heavy layers from Wendy Vecchi's Studio 490 Art Parts450 Quick Dry Adhesive was my choice to complete this project.

First I would have to apply an embossed metal to 2 of the pieces from the Large Circle Frame {Studio 490 art parts}.

I then used Ranger's Metal Foil Tape that I wrapped around the outer ring of this project. I embossed this ring using the heads of different screws and a hammer. The metal was  darkened with Adirondack Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink in Pitch Black and burnished with a paper towel. The three circles were attached together with the 450 Quick Dry Adhesive along with the fabric patch. To ensure that the components stayed layered and not collapse on themselves I added Liquid Scrap Dots to  both the outer ring and the fabric patch. After allowing to cure overnight this project was ready to hang.
